The ensemble features a group of musicians from diverse and colorful ethnic and musical backgrounds: Gary Schwantes (tenor and soprano saxophones/bamboo flutes/composer), Winnie Wong, guzheng (Chinese zither), Yangqin Zhao, yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer), Doug Ebert (bass), Surya Prakasha (drumset/percussion/harmonium).

The ensemble has performed at many San Francisco Bay Area venues including: Herbst Theater, SF City Hall, de Young Museum, SF Conservatory of Music, Old First Concerts, Palace Hotel, Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, Oakland Asian Cultural Center, People in Plazas, and numerous private and corporate events.
ULTRA WORLD X-TET is solidly grounded in mastery of traditional as well as contemporary techniques, producing new and unusual music in a way that remains accessible, engaging and entertaining. Fans of world music, jazz, chamber music, experimental music or anyone interested in new musical forms created with respect for and mastery of traditional forms will love this group.
